It is important to note that beryllium penetrates quite deeply, and stones 2-3 mm in diameter may be saturated with beryllium to the full depth. Larger stones are colored only at the periphery, while the internal part of a stone is not affected; therefore, the treatment of sapphires by the beryllium thermal diffusion method is possible only on the already cut stones. Samples after beryllium diffusion acquire bright and sometimes not natural orange and yellow hues, and their price is very low: $20-40 per carat. The expert reports on these stones by the world's laboratories always state that they are enhanced with beryllium. These sapphires are used in the cheap jewelry of mass market level, where the fact that the stones are beryllium-enhanced is quite often hidden.

Heat treatment

Treatment of sapphires with insufficient color saturation by means of high-temperature heating. As a result of heat treatment the color of raw material changes into a brighter and richer color throughout the crystal. After cutting such rough we see a beautiful orange color.
