The history of pear shaped cut

The pear cut is a truly special and distinct shape when it comes to gemstones. Developed by a Belgian diamond cutter, Lodewyk van Berquem, way back in 1458, it's a unique blend of a round cut and a marquise cut giving the gemstone a rounded head and a tapered point, resembling the shape of a pear.

It wasn't always a favorite among the wealthy and nobles, but it gained momentum in the 15th century. It was particularly stylish during the Art Deco period of the 1920s and 1930s, and considered to be a modern and sophisticated cut. However, like all trends, it eventually fell out of favor. But, recently, there's been a resurgence in vintage-inspired and unique cuts like the pear shape.
