Madagascar is known for producing some of the highest quality sapphires in a wide range of colors, including blue, pink, yellow, green, and even black sapphires. The sapphires from Madagascar are known for their unique colors, high clarity and excellent luster.
Madagascar sapphires are mainly found in the southern part of the island, in the region of Ilakaka and Andranondambo. They are typically mined in alluvial deposits meaning they are found in gravels and sands that have been transported by rivers and streams. They are often found in secondary deposits as a result of erosion of the primary sapphire-bearing rocks.
The blue sapphires from Madagascar are particularly prized for their unique and intense blue color which is known as the "Madagascar blue". They also have other colors too like the padparadscha sapphire which have a delicate pinkish-orange color and is highly valued for its rarity.
